Major feature: instant payments in the Payit app

At the till of your fundraising dinner, at the bar or at the sign-up table, cash still rules. If you do not rent a payment terminal, you lose everyone who has no cash on them. And at the end of the night, someone still has to count the cash box and take the money to the bank.

The Payit app now solves this. You type in the amount on your phone, the app shows a QR code, and your customer pays with the camera of their own device. No terminal, no rental contract, no extra hardware.

What is new?

The Payit app now has a Receive payment function. You will find it in the menu of an activity. The screen that opens looks like a payment terminal: a large amount at the top and a keypad below it.

You type in the amount, you press OK, and the app shows a QR code with the Payit logo in the middle. Your customer scans that code with the regular camera of their phone, lands on the secure payment page and pays. As soon as the money comes in, your screen turns green with a checkmark and the amount. One tap on New payment and you are ready for the next customer.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Open the Payit app and select the right team.
  2. Tap the activity you want to book the payment on.
  3. Open the menu in the top right corner and choose Receive payment.
  4. Type in the amount on the keypad. Euros first, then the comma, then the cents: 12 , 5 0 becomes € 12.50.
  5. Press OK. The app creates the payment and shows the QR code with the amount above it.
  6. Let your customer scan the code with their phone camera and pay.
  7. You see a green checkmark with the amount. Done.

Does your customer change their mind? Cancel takes you back to the keypad.

What happens behind the scenes?

A till payment is not a separate kind of payment. It runs through exactly the same flow as an online registration on your activity:

  • It becomes a registration on your activity, booked on a hidden product called "Kassa". That product is created automatically on your first till payment and stays invisible on your public registration page and in your product list.
  • The payment runs through Stripe, on the same secure payment page as a regular registration. The QR code in the app is that payment link, branded with the Payit logo.
  • The settlement stays the same. The Payit fee is deducted automatically and the rest lands on your organisation's Stripe account. Your free transactions count as they always do.
  • Your customer pays exactly the amount you type in. No transaction costs are added on top of the amount on the QR code.
  • The app follows the payment itself. Every few seconds it checks whether the money has come in, so there is nothing to refresh or look up.

What you need

  • The Payit app on iOS or Android, in the latest version.
  • A Payit account that is a member of the team.
  • Stripe as payment provider, with a completed onboarding. If you use another provider, this function does not work yet and the app tells you so.
  • An activity to book the payment on.
  • Internet on your phone and on your customer's phone.

What you do not need: hardware, a rental contract or a separate cash register.

Good to know

  • A till payment is at least € 0.50 and at most € 10,000.
  • The payment link stays valid for at least 30 minutes. If it does not work out, simply create a new payment.
  • The payment is registered in the name of the team member who took it, since a payment at the till has no known buyer.
  • Your customer receives no confirmation mail and no ticket, and your team receives no push notification. Otherwise everyone's phone would go off with every round of drinks.
  • You find every till payment with the registrations of the activity, with the amount on a Kassa line. In your exports too.
  • Cancelling in the app only stops the waiting. If your customer still pays afterwards, that payment simply shows up in your overview.
  • Typed in the wrong amount? You can refund the payment in full from your dashboard, just like any other payment.

What do you use this for?

  • The bar or the till at a dinner, quiz night or party
  • Raffle tickets and support cards you sell on the spot
  • Someone who signs up for a camp or trip at the door
  • A second-hand fair or flea market
  • Your club shop or supporters' stand
  • A last open balance a member wants to settle on the spot

What it is not

We would rather be honest about this. It is not a full cash register with articles and stock, and it does not replace your registration form. Your customer gets no ticket and no confirmation in their mailbox, so for real registrations you keep using the registration form. This is meant for what you used to take in cash: collecting an amount quickly, without any fuss.

Summary

  • Your phone becomes your payment terminal, without extra hardware or a rental contract
  • Type in the amount, have the QR code scanned, done
  • Every payment simply ends up with your registrations
  • Your customer pays exactly the amount you typed in
